TheMontreal Protests Turn Violent Amid Anti-Israel Demonstrations, Trudeau Criticized for Attending Taylor Swift Concert

Montreal erupted in unrest on November 22 as anti-Israel protests turned violent. The protests, coinciding with NATO’s parliamentary assembly in Quebec, saw demonstrators rally against the alliance while also condemning Israeli policies. Chaos unfolded as protesters, around 800 strong, set vehicles ablaze, shattered shop windows, and lit smoke bombs. An effigy of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was burned, escalating tensions on the streets. Montreal police, in response, deployed chemical deterrents and used truncheons to control the situation, resulting in three arrests.

As these events unfolded, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau became a focus of online criticism after being spotted at a Taylor Swift concert in Toronto. Trudeau, who represents the Papineau district in Montreal, was seen attending Swift's Eras Tour concert with his family, just as Montreal witnessed some of its most intense protests.

A video showing Trudeau dancing and singing, as well as sharing friendship bracelets, went viral on social media, sparking strong reactions. "Trudeau at a Taylor Swift concert while Montreal burns," one user commented, reflecting a widespread sentiment on social media. Some critics even likened Trudeau’s actions to Roman Emperor Nero, who, according to legend, played music while Rome was on fire.

While criticism mounted, some internet users defended Trudeau, pointing out that he was simply spending time with his family. "He's just being a goofy dad with his daughter at a concert. Nothing more," one user shared.

Following the events, Trudeau publicly condemned the violence in Montreal, denouncing the antisemitism, intimidation, and destruction seen during the protests. “What we saw on the streets of Montreal was appalling,” Trudeau posted, adding that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were in contact with local authorities to ensure accountability for the actions of the rioters.
